This is a volunteers' website of a Kozhukhovo municipal shelter for homeless animals in Moscow, Russia.

We see our task in helping the animals kept in this particular shelter: about 2500 dogs and more than 150 cats. Our mission is to look after the animals while they stay in this facility and ultimately, to adopt them out.

These animals are homeless animals that have been captured from the streets and avoided being shot.

Moscow has a striking number of homeless dogs - there are a lot of animals kicked on the street by their owners, when the animals are no longer wanted.

It is common to see a dead puppy/dog on the streets run by a car; dogs are killed and eaten by homeless people. There is an organization "Doghunters" who search for homeless animals (dogs/puppies) and kill them. There are a lot of "well meaning grandmothers" who habitually spray dog food with a poison and offer it to the homeless dogs and puppies.

THERE ARE NO WORKING LAWS PROTECTING ANIMALS IN RUSSIA

Dog shelters are crowded. Have you ever been to the shelter housing 3 000 dogs? There are about 10 of those in Moscow area. It s not possible to take care of every single dog!

Shelters aren't heated - in severe Moscow winter dogs may die. Dogs are kept in the small cold cages in the open air, several in one cage, sometimes without food and water, on bare wet boards. Despite difficult conditions of living, most of them are people-oriented and would love to have a caring Owner.

Volunteers do their best trying to find homes for these "prisoners", but it seems to be an overwhelming task due to low number of volunteers, enormous number of dogs and disinterest from the general public. Taking the above into account, it was decided to enter European and other countries hoping to find people who love animals and care about them.

Our volunteers' team do a tremendous job, which resulted in adoptions far beyond the Europe. Our furry friends have found their homes not only in Russia, but also in: Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Czech Republic, Germany, USA, Canada, Malta, UK, etc...

Everyone has the right to live! Homeless animals are no exception.
